Causes Of Stomach Pain On The Left Side.

Abdominal and stomach pain is one of the most common types of pain that people experience. Severe abdominal pain that becomes evident very quickly indicates a serious underlying issue. If the pain gets out of hand, you may need to visit a specialist immediately. If you are wondering why you might be suffering from stomach pain in the left side, here are some common causes:

Diverticulitis

One of the most common causes of serious stomach pain on the left side of your body is diverticulitis. This is indicated by persistent pain on the lower left side of your stomach along with a few other symptoms. Oftentimes, the weak spots in your colon experience pressure which results in small pouches called the diverticula. Even though diverticula is very common, it usually occurs after the age of 40.

Diverticulitis occurs as a result of a tear in the diverticular, which causes swelling and severe infections. Apart from left side abdominal pain, some other symptoms include fever, vomiting, nausea and abdominal tenderness.

Hernia Stomach Pain

hernia occurs as a result of an organ or body part pushing through the surrounding muscle or tissue. The pain experienced due to a hernia can be pretty extreme; however, oftentimes, a lump or bulge may also appear to confirm your diagnosis. Some other symptoms of a hernia include an increasing bulge, increasing abdominal pain in the left or right side, pain when lifting stuff and a dull ache.

It is important to remember that not all hernias produce a bulge, but extreme stomach pain in the left or right side can be an indication of a hernia. Moreover, since hernias can cause severe problems, you might want to visit a doctor if you have any suspicions.

Gas

If you experience stomach pains in the lower left or right region, you might have gas. Gas is a completely normal result of effective swallowing and digestion. It passes through your digestive tract, from your stomach to your rectum, often resulting in pain.

Gas is caused by a variety of reasons including overeating, smoking, chewing gum, inability to digest some foods, consuming gas-producing foods, etc. Stomach pain on the left side due to gas isn’t something you need to worry about unless you are experiencing other symptoms as well, including vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, heartburn or blood in your stool.

Indigestion

Another common cause of stomach pain on the left or right side is indigestion. Indigestion occurs after eating as your stomach produces acid which can end up irritating your esophagus, bowel or stomach. Indigestion pain is usually experienced in the upper left or right region of the abdomen, causing distress.

Indigestion leads to mild pain but many people also experience discomfort and burning sensations sometimes. A few symptoms of indigestion include heartburn, feeling bloated or full, passing gas and nausea. If you experience indigestion pains too often, you should consult a doctor.

Stomach pains in the left side can mean a lot of things, depending on the severity and type of pain experienced. For proper diagnosis and treatment, you should visit a doctor!
