What is Insomnia?

You may have experienced sleepless nights before because of stress or elation. Once in a lifetime encounter doesn’t sound too bad, right? This condition is called insomnia and it is defined as not being able to sleep at night for days on end or not being able to sleep as long as desired. It can lead to fatigue, decreased performance, low energy and mood swings. If left untreated, the disorder can give way to other health concerns such as depression, hypertension and diabetes and may even prove to be fatal.

·  Types of Insomnia

People affected with insomnia may go through different stages. People diagnosed with a type of this can later be diagnosed with an advanced stage if they don’t take the necessary precautions.

Acute Insomnia: It is a brief episode of insomnia that can be brought about by a stressful situation. It doesn’t usually require any treatment.

Chronic insomnia: If a person has a long-term pattern, then the case is considered chronic insomnia. to diagnose this, the doctors monitor the patient’s sleeping history for three months. If they find that the patient can’t stay asleep for more than three nights a week, it’s apparent that they have this type.

Onset Insomnia: If someone has difficulty falling asleep in the early hours of the night, it may be because of this.

These types are the most common; comorbid and maintenance insomnia are two types of insomnia that don’t affect many people.

· Causes of Sleepless Nights

There are several causes of this sleeping disorder, and at times, it can be difficult to pinpoint the exact cause. Once you get to know the cause, finding a treatment for the disorder can be easier.

  • Unhealthy sleeping habits can be behind the onset of the sleeping order. A person accustomed to late nights is more at risk of developing insomnia. Similarly, consuming too much caffeine or sugary foods right before bedtime can disrupt the sleep pattern, leading to insomnia if the habits don’t change.
  • Chronic stress is one of the biggest factors that can cause sleep disorder. If a person goes through dramatic lifestyle changes, stress can creep in silently and disrupt their sleeping habits. If the stressful situation isn’t dealt with efficiently, it can give way to sleepless nights and eventually insomnia.
  • When sleeping, the temperature of the room should be cool and there should be minimal light. Anything other than this can also cause sleep disorder down the road.
